Few changes in the gender gap

While women in advertising in NZ earn less than their male counterparts, the difference is more pronounced in many other markets, according to the latest survey from recruitment agency Firebrand (offices in Australia, NZ, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, UK).

The survey is the Firebrand Market Pulse Report focusing on gender, salary and lifestyle insights for Digital, Creative, Advertising, Media, Marketing and Communications professionals.

The June 2012 Market Pulse Report includes insights into:

  • Median salaries by industry sector and gender
  • Median salaries by job title and gender
  • Employees receiving lifestyle benefits
  • Salary movements before and after the financial crisis

Here’s a summary of the main findings:

  • Across six of Firebrand’s markets all sectors (Account Management / Creative / Marketing / Digital) show males earn significantly more than females.
  • However, NZ and the UK have the least % difference and both markets show no difference, as a median, across the Multi Media / Design / Digital roles.
  • When you do dig down into specific job categories, however, the survey found that men do not dominate in every case. In NZ, female Account Directors earn 20.8% more, Female Marketing Managers earn 1.4% more & female web designers earn 7.9% more.

In regard to employees receiving lifestyle benefits, Firebrand found the following across its markets:

Firebrand also used its Aquent Orange Book to look back to 2008 & compare salaries with the current data from its eSalary Survey. It’s clear that salary movements in the marketing, creative, digital, account management & media roles have not been consistent at all. Digital salaries on the whole have increased, whilst marketing salaries for those with little experience have decreased.
